SANDRA NANKOMA
SANDRA NANKOMA
Fusion soul from Uganda
Sandra Nankoma marries soul, blues, folks and traditional music from eastern Uganda, from where she originates. With the profound and sensual voice of a soul diva, reminiscent of Farida Sonko, Miriam Makeba, Anita Baker and Erykah Badu, she sings about the fight for survival, the powerlessness of Ugandan politics and, in “Kaddugala”, the discrimination against black women which pushes them to bleach their skin. She sings in her two native languages, Luganda and Lugwere, and in English, thus linking American soul music to its African roots.
Convinced that music is the vehicle of social change, she engages her art in order to contribute to her society, especially to the cause of women and girls. Her commitment against discrimination and xenophobia is particularly evident through the listening of her first solo album Ye’nze. The anthem for dark-skinned girls to love their skin tone and reject skin bleaching took home the continental award for “Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music.”
Sandra Nankoma’s second album 'The Black Dame’ is due to be released in beginning of 2023.
